Syria Sound of Memory

In this project Terra Nova worked with the Syrian community of Ards and North Down, and their friends, to rediscover a shared memory, and bring it back through the memories of many people, recreated in sound. It represents memories of a perfect, day, the first day of Eid. It went live for Eid 2021: the 12th of May.

مرحباً بكم في مشروع صوت الذاكرة من سوريا  هذه تجربة جديدة : و هي عمل فني صوتي غامر مصحوب بالموسيقى  و تم عملة  بمشاركة كاملة  من السوريين .  لا شيء تستمع له تم تسجيله من فنانينا الصوتيين في سوريا.  الخمس مقاطع الصوتية تم عملها بالكامل من أصوات أو أجزاء من أصوات موجودة في أيرلندا الشمالية أو تم إعطائها لنا من المشاركين.  أشخاص يوصفون ذكرياتهم - و عن طريق المحاولة و الخطاء اكتشفنا ما يجب إدخاله في عالم الصوت.  هدفنا هو بناء وقت و مكان من السعادة, عن أول يوم من العيد في حدائق مسجد خالد بن الوليد في حمص منذ سنوات كثيرة مضت. هذا المكان يعيش في الذاكرة.  

الأصدقاء من أيرلندا الشمالية قدموا التعليق الصوتي باللغة الإنجليزية لجعل المكان و الزمان أكثر وضوحاً  للمتحدثين باللغة الإنجليزية لفهم ما يستمعون إليه.

نحن كفنانين  نقدم وعد أخلاقي بأن نحاول دائماً أن نتبع التعليمات من زملائنا السوريين  و لكن إذا كان هذا العمل غير متقن فهو بسبب عدم إتقاننا كفنانين  - محاولة إعادة عمل صوت الذاكرة - ليس أصدقائنا من سوريا هم من  أرشدونا في عمله.  نتمنى أن تستمتعوا بزيارة هذا العالم الصوتي.  أنه ينتمي لأصدقائنا السوريين الذين يعملون في المشروع معنا.

This project is a new experiment for Terra Nova: a work of immersive sound art with accompanying music, entirely co-created with Syrian participants.  The five soundscapes you will hear were created entirely from found sound and bits recorded or given to us by Syrian participants in Northern Ireland.  People describing their memories - through trial and error we figured out what needed to be included in the sound world. Our aim was to reconstruct a happy time and place, the first day of Eid in the gardens of the Khalid al Ibn-Walid Mosque in Homs many years ago. It is a place that lives on in memory.  

Northern Irish friends provided the English voiceover to make the place and time more clear for those who speak English to understand what they are hearing.

As artists we made an ethical promise to always try to follow the instructions of our Syrian colleagues, but if the work is not perfect is due to our imperfections as artists - trying to recreate the sound of memory - not to our Syrian friends who guided us.  We hope you enjoy visiting this auditory world. 

To celebrate Eid, the project will go live on the 12th of May, 2021. Headphones or earbuds will make the whole experience much better!
