Artists: Raoul Brand and Anna Lecky
This artwork is a soundscape, a composition created from early morning recordings made by contributors from around the world, reflecting the sounds of home - the sounds that surround and connect us as humans.
People from across the world were given a clear task that was exactly the same, wherever they were from. Sound Artist Raoul Brand says: 'We gave them a task, to record 60 seconds of sound per day, and the work is created from those recordings, supported by what people said about their homes. I think it gives the piece a very intimate feel. They chose what interested them, I just curated that into a recording. I was trying to connect them in a poetic way, but the interesting thing was that they co-created the work. The values that Terra Nova discussed with us as artists really influenced how the soundscape was created and therefore the tone of the project'. He adds 'I was surprised by how honest and thoughtful the participants were, and was glad to have that present in the final recording. As a result of working with Terra Nova I have thought a lot about how the values we bring to a project affect the artwork we make together.'
Anna said "When engaging with people who have lived somewhere else from the country they were born in, we really wanted to explore the concept of home. The results were surprising. It was beautiful how universal the idea of a kettle clicking on was. We are really grateful that we got the opportunity to work on this project. Not only did it allow for an end product creation but it also gave us (Anna and Raoul) - artists who did not know each other before this experience - a chance to connect and work together over the most disconnected year we have faced."
We recommend enjoying the soundscape through headphones if possible.
